versus ryan. if you're advising the vice president, because he's got a lot of ground work to make up for it here out of that first debate for their ticket, what do you tell him? >> i'd say to joe biden, be yourself, because biden has a unique way of bringing reality into these very substantive conversations. and i'll use big bird as an example, and we're sort of making a joke, and yes, it gives people laughter, but there's something very serious about this issue. i mean, the "sesame street" programming, pbs programming has been in -- i worked in education for a number of years -- the gold standard, not just here in the united states, around the world, recognized as a gold standard in children's education. at a time when kids in our country, not enough of them can actually read proficiently, what sense does it make to cut? i mean, we're not going to balance that $5 trillion hole by getting rid of big bird. that's what i think part of reminding people about big bird does, how ridiculous the rhetoric from the romney/ryan campaign is, but also the idea that, so, you're going to cut somet

. so we have to see whether paul ryan, who is very smart policy guy, can beat joe biden who makes shall mistake, but he's been around a long time and he those some thing. p. >> you wrote a column suting the debates ultimately are oftentimes historically irrelevant, that they don't change the outcome. is there something specifically happening this time that's different? >> what i said in that story was that historical pattern is that usually even if you have a surprisingly good first debate for one party or the other, usually they don't change the trajectory of the campaign. but every once in a while, and 2000 is the best example, a whole series of thins come together and the vice presidential debate is important in that process to accelerate the wave or stop it. and that's what we'll find out in kentucky later. >> you said the jobs number doesn't matter. is that in part this whole jack welch thing over the weekend around whether the numbers are real, does that matter in all of this? >> i think the jack welch stuff was crazy talk. and earlier in the year when you guys were down in washin

. it is a cheap housing play. it is headed into the holiday season. >> bed, bath and beyond. next one from ryan -- is it time to get into home builders? he noticed a strong residential and commercial demand. >> i wouldn't be buying home builders right here. i think they're all overly extended. we like the suppliers. home depots, even the drif plays like wells fargo that owns 33% of the mortgage market. clearly the housing game is in play but not the toll brothers. go with the derivative plays. >> seema, thanks. >>> catch strapped state and local governments across america are increasingly betting on casinos to help raise revenue. which stocks are cashing in on that trend, we'll turn to cnbc's brian schactman live at ohio at the opening of the hollywood columbus casino. not a bad assignment for the day, brian. >> reporter: not bad, although i only get to watch right now. we got to wait until i get off the clock. this had is a huge deal for ohio. they get jobs, they get tax revenue and they have a casino on a property that was actually abandoned. the question we want to ask on "fast money," what'

this thursday on the 11th you've got paul ryan and vice president joe biden. this is going to be very important for obama's effort to stave off romney. then on the 16th you got the second obama-romney debate. on the 22nd final obama-romney debate. then the last friday before the election one more jobs number. my own inclination the job numbers aren't quite as "game change"ing for debates as for the reason voters know how they feel about the economy. they don't need a government report. it does get a lot of attention and we got a race that's plainly at this point even though obama still has a slight advantage in the battleground states this race can go either way. >> interesting. then we got the governor, of course, speaking at vmi about foreign policy, an area for which a little while he appeared to want to take the campaign, at least before the debate. how ground moving is this? >> reporter: i don't think it's very ground moving. it's not what people will vote on. for romney it's an effort to press a leadership advantage which may be one of the things that move the numbers for him after the de
